According to reports Tuesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley had secret phone calls and meetings in efforts to go behind Trump’s back, during the time he was commander-in-chief.
Milley allegedly made secret calls to the chief military officer in Beijing and summoned top American military officers to a clandestine gathering, demanding they only obey orders that come through Milley, per Just the News.
Milley claims he did so in fear that Trump would start a nuclear battle.
The actions are reportedly described in a new book, Peril, by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.
One Pentagon official told Just the News that Milley should face charges if the reports are true.
“He isn’t a military dictator, and this isn’t his decision to unilaterally contact a foreign government,” the official said. “I would expect him to be brought up on charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.”
Trump, however, blasted the new reporting in a statement Monday, saying Milley invented the story.
“The good news is that the story is Fake News concocted by a weak and ineffective general together with two authors who I refused to give an interview to because they write fiction, not fact,” Trump wrote. He added that actions “should be taken immediately against Milley,” and “better generals” should get involved.”
“If the story of ‘Dumbass’ General Mark Milley…is true, then I assume he would be tried for TREASON,” Trump said.
“For the record, I never even thought of attacking China – and China knows that. The people that fabricated the story are sick and demented, and the people who print it are just as bad,” he continued. “In fact, I’m the only President in decades who didn’t get the U.S. into a war – a well known fact that is seldom reported.”
